He trained with the Chicago Moving Company and at the Merce Cunningham and Joffrey Ballet studios in New York and holds a Master of Fine Arts in dance from the University of Michigan. Christopher was a founding member of the New Dance Ensemble of Minneapolis and performed with the Chicago Moving Company, Harbinger Dance Company of Detroit, and Joanna Haigood’s Zaccho company in San Francisco. In 2007 Christopher earned a Ph.D. in educational psychology and recently retired from a position as a researcher at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

BECKY HEIST has been fortunate in finding opportunities to dance with four Minnesota-based dance companies following a 35-year stint directing and teaching in the Dance Program at Macalester College. In addition to choreographing for and dancing in Christopher Watson’s dance company she has worked with Young Dance, Off-Leash Area and Paula Mann. Her dance film, “Life Drawings,” was commissioned by Su Love and presented in a series of poetry readings. Kinetic Evolutions and Rushe Dance Project are co-producing a modern contemporary dance concert.

The concept for this collaboration began in late 2019. Rehearsals started and had to abruptly end early spring 2020. All rehearsals were cancelled and the performers went into a pause.

This performance features a progression of dances created primarily during the course of the pandemic. Some choreography was developed through virtual rehearsals or in outdoor environments. Recently rehearsals have been held in person in a dance studio.

A focus was put on interactions and different ways of connecting with each other. Partnering became a health risk and taboo. Physical touch is something the companies have had to rediscover.

The past couple of years have influenced our work and artistic choices. We want to offer a space for everyone to pause from the heaviness of the world and to witness in our shared experience.

#pause: motion in pause features choreography by Sarah LaRose-Holland, Samantha Heggem, John Surber and guest choreographer Sarah Hauss.

Performers include:

Kinetic Evolutions dancers: Sarah LaRose-Holland (Artistic Director), Sarah Hauss, Samantha Heggem,
Catlin Murphy, Hai Dang Nguyen, John Surber.

Rushe Dance Project dancers: Samantha Heggem (Co-Director), John Surber (Co-Director), Kadie Habana.

Collective Unfolding - an informal sharing of works in progress

Sunday, April 28, 2018
3 PM

Ballet Co. Laboratory
276 East Lafayette Frontage Road, St. Paul 55107

Admission - $5

Christopher Watson Dance Company hosts an informal showing of works in progress at the new Ballet Co.Laboratory studios in St. Paul. Dances by Christopher Watson, John Surber, Jennifer Mack, Becky Heist and Sarah Hauss (for Kinetic Evolutions Dance Company) will be previewed with opportunities for Q and A and audience feedback. Refreshments will be served.

Christopher Watson’s piece "Come Back" explores human connectedness— and the loss of it— through gestures, bold movement and partnering. This abstract sextet is set to the music of contemporary British composer Nils Frahm, whose composition has the unlikely name of "For — Peter — Toilet Brushes." During a portion of the piece Frahm pounds the grand piano strings with toilet brushes, producing a melodic/percussion sound. The dancers move to the relentless pulse of the music, joining, separating and joining together again.

Five dancers romp, roll, slide and shake to John Adams’ composition, Gnarly Buttons. In her latest choreography Becky Heist creates a field of playful competition and synchronous partnerships.

Sarah Hauss, Guest Choreographer for Kinetic Evolutions Dance Company, blurs the lines between nature and humanity with her new dance. This Underside of Growth creates cascading images of open skies and swaying dark forests; at times reverberating within the human psyche as it evolves and unfolds.

Christopher Watson Dance Company members include: Catlin Murphy, Anne-Marie Wittenberg, Lori Mercil, Sarah LaRose-Holland, Becky Heist, Sarah Hauss, John Surber, Kelsey Charlotte and Jesse Neumann-Peterson.

Kinetic Evolutions Dance Company members include: Sarah LaRose-Holland, Artistic Director & Dancer; Sarah Hauss, Choreographer; with company dancers: Johnny Bates, Samantha Heggem, Catlin Murphy, and John Surber.

Karlovsky will present the premiere of her evening length work, LOUDER THAN WORDSexposing the powerful subject of communication and non-verbal forms of personal, social, and cultural expression. This evening-length work exposes the use of non-verbal human interaction through direct and indirect articulations of gesture, touch, and body language.

This concert collaboration and performance exchange between Karlovsky & Company Dance of St. Louis and Minneapolis-based Kinetic Evolutions Dance also features original choreography and artistic collaboration by both company artistic directors, Dawn Karlovsky and Sarah LaRose-Holland.  Together they share the stage with their unique choreographic voices offering stimulating, emotionally stirring, and athletically fluid dance! The two companies will perform in each other’s cities providing a way to strengthen the diversity of contemporary dance presented, and to deepen the artistic connection and recognition among dancers and other companies within the Midwest region.

"Destination Twin Cities"

at The Lab Theater

Minneapolis, MN

June 14 - 15, 2013

Two Minnesota artists -- choreographer Sarah LaRose-Holland and jazz pianist Butch Thompson  have collaborated to present "Destination Twin Cities," an impressionistic, time-traveling exploration of neighborhoods, landmarks, people and places that define urban life in Minnesota. Who were we, and who are we today?

The performance includes images of Saint Paul's Swede Hollow neighborhood and iconic landmarks like the Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis. Revisit the experience of the seedy Hennepin Avenue "strip" where jazz musicians provided the sound track and the counter-cultural antiwar lifestyle that emerged on Minneapolis' West Bank during the 1960s. This is just part of the story.

"Destination Twin Cities" features Sarah LaRose-Holland's dynamically engaging dance company Kinetic Evolutions and renowned Grammy Award winning jazz pianist Butch Thompson. Performances are set for 7:30PM on Friday June 14th and 2PM and 7:30PM on Saturday June 15th at The Lab Theater in Minneapolis' warehouse district.

word/move

(a Sandbox Theatre production)

Inspired by Sandbox Theatre’s research on Beatnik Giselle, they decided to see how far poets and dancers could take their work together.  Sandbox sent out a simple call to poets, asking for the work they felt best expressed themselves.  Sandbox received over 270 entries from around the country and selected 12 poets whose work they felt could be turned into movement.  Now Sandbox has handed that work over to choreographers from the Twin Cities with only two instructions: (1) The entire poem must be heard or seen by the audience; and (2) the dance can last no longer than 5 minutes.  It’s a bold experiment, and we’re hoping for surprises.

Kinetic Kitchen is a dance series produced by Sarah LaRose-Holland that showcases professional choreographers and dance companies at Patrick’s Cabaret. Please note that the Friday show will be different from the Saturday show. This is a new model starting this year in 2012. Since we can only do a few weekends of Kinetic Kitchen shows in 2012, we’re doing a different performance every night that we have a show. This way I can get through the long waiting list I’ve had and give choreographers a chance to perform in 2012. Performances take place a few times per year and generally showcase four or five choreographers in a given performance.
